US Jobless Claims Report Moderate Rise Last Week

GOVERMENT REPORT SERIES

Applications for US unemployment insurance last week increased slightly to the highest point since January, indicating that the strength in the labor market is moderating.

  • SEASONALLY ADJUSTED DATA; in the week ending July 2, the advance figure for seasonally adjusted initial claims was 235,000, an increase of 4,000 from the previous week’s unrevised level of 231,000. The 4-week moving average was 232,500, an increase of 750 from the previous week’s unrevised average of 231,750.

 

  • UNADJUSTED DATA; The advance number of actual initial claims under state programs, unadjusted, totaled 219,507 in the week ending July 2, an increase of 11,919 (or 5.7 percent) from the previous week. The seasonal factors had expected an increase of 8,553 (or 4.1 percent) from the previous week. There were 382,622 initial claims in the comparable week in 2021.
